next to the brain, is among the bodys most important parts, ensures that people can do everything from walk to sit down. An injury to the spinal cord, however, meant
that people could do neither. Some were paraplegic, meaning they were unable to walk. Then there were the quadriplegics, people who could move neither arms nor legs because of injury
to the spinal cord. Once a person was paralyzed, there was very little he or she could do except wait for death
- especially if most motor skills were gone in extreme cases of spinal cord injury. This was especially tragic when it came to young people - who seemed to be
the ones who suffered most from such damage, either through heavy contact sports (such as football) or through reckless driving that would cause accidents and resulting paralysis. Many of these
youngsters were cut down in the prime of their lives, and little could be done to help repair the injured spinal cords, particularly once the healing process began. Surgery was
often expensive and impractical, and more often than not, caused more problems than it solved. The good news is that spinal cord
injury is something that has gone from impossible to repair to something that can be repaired. While such injuries still do create paraplegics and quadriplegics, its found that immediate action
following an injury can actually help deter damage to the spine. Since 1990, scientists and researchers have been collecting both anecdotal and research evidence concerning the administration of medicines such
as methylprednisolone and their effects on damage to the spinal cord. The good news for many athletes and car passengers pinned in a wreck is that such medicines are proving
