reputation for quality, Merck has attracted the best and brightest scientists and chemists to its R&D labs. For all of its longevity, research and development, however, Merck is in financial
trouble. With the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) keeping a careful eye on prescriptions and manufactured drugs, and with competition from generic drug-makers becoming more prevalent, large pharmaceutical companies such
as Merck are running into financial problems. These companies are attempting to survive through mergers and acquisitions. However, in an industry that is focused on consolidation as a way to
survive the current climate, Merck is determined to remain independent and to continue to manufacture quality drugs and pharmaceuticals. The purpose of this
paper is to examine Mercks history, discuss its current status and to examine its financial information. The end of this paper contains a balance sheet discussing various financials, including ROI,
ROE, stock prices earnings per share and other income and debt information that is important to this publicly traded company. By examining Mercks financial status, trends will be apparent that
this once giant drug company is definitely suffering a mid-life crisis. Background Merck, which is headquartered in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, is known
