fit the all-around, general definition of a leader? Leadership, in its most basic sense, is defined as first and foremost, establishing a clear vision (Leadership, 2009). Second, it involves communicating
the vision with others so they willingly follow (Leadership, 2009). Following that, leaders provide information, knowledge and methods to help others reach the vision and finally, leaders are able
to coordinate and balance the interests of all stakeholders (Leadership, 2009). Whitman seems to encompass all of these values, and then some. But
as business academicians have pointed out, there are various types of leadership. The question well now try to answer is how Whitman fits into these categories.
First is transactional leadership. Transactional leaders assume that people are motivated and function best under a system that offers reward and punishment (Transactional Leadership, 2009).
The transactional leader believes that people best operate in systems with a clear chain of command - and when they agree to do a job, they also cede all authority
to the manager (Transactional Leadership, 2009). Transactional leaders work by creating clear structures and definitely let their subordinates know and understand what is required, and what they obtain when
they follow orders (Transactional Leadership, 2009). Whitman has some transactional traits in that she believes in establishing a clear system. She also
establishes expectations of her employees - no one is in the dark about her expectations or how they are to meet them. Whitman is not a believer in "punishment,"
