innovation in nearly every facet of human existence. However, it has to be stated that if it werent for the focused vision of one man, Charlemagne, these progressive changes might
not have happened at the rate at which they did. His nephew, understanding that he was in the company of greatness, set to the task to capture and record the
various events of King Charles (Charlemagne) as he saw them unfold. His book, The Life of Charlemagne offers the reader a glimpse into the life, times, and mindset of Medieval
Europe. This book is not a tribute to a great monarch, rather it is written with a keen eye to its longevity throughout history. In
as factual a tone as the author can comprise, he has managed to produce a book that chronicles all of the accomplishments of Charlemagne, and to explain why they were
needed, what happened as a result of the implementation, and what the prevailing sentiment was of the day. One of the first areas that
are addressed in the book is the fact that King Charles demanded that the sons of noblemen learn to read and write. Until that time the only people who could
read or write were the clergy. Shrewdly, Charlemagne realized what power the clergy held over the nobles by the sheer fact that they could read the words of the Bible.
The ability to read and write for themselves, gave the nobility more power and removed a great deal of the awe reserved for the clergy and the Church.
