the process of resolution as it pertains to this particular scenario. This particular case deals with Joanna, a 17-year-old girl from Taiwan who comes to the U.S. to continue her
education, and Lillian, her aunt, who is 50 years old. Lillian is a nurse and a part-time student who studies traditional Chinese medicine, and ignores her family to do so.
Since Joanna has moved into her aunts house in the U.S., her aunt has forbidden her to have her own life. Instead
of allowing her niece to talk on the phone and have her own friends, Joanna is only permitted to study, study, study.
The problem here is that Joanna is a naturally outgoing girl who needs friends and phone calls to balance her academic schedule. In complaining to her mother about everything,
Joanna only receives the advice that she has to follow her aunts orders. But finally, her mother agrees that mediation is necessary, as both parties need to find a solution
to this particular problem. When it came to the mediation, Joanna had a few complaints, namely that should couldnt hang out with
friends (as mentioned above), that she was forced to go to church with her aunts family when she didnt want to, that Lillian isnt necessarily taking steps to be a
good guardian, that she never picks up Joanna after school, that while Lillian is being paid to care for her, she doesnt. The food is mainly microwave frozen food, rather
than healthy meals. Basically, Joanna feels that, on the one hand, shes not being protected, and on the other, shes being stifled.
