Mediation is a powerful tool that can be used in a variety of human services situations. For example, in the area of the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA,
the process to file a complaint tends to go better with mediation than it does by going through the state equal opportunity organization, and a possible filing in civil court.
One reason is that the mediation process allows participants to solve their own problems and develop their own solutions, rather than throwing them to a judge and jury to decide
(Key Bridge Foundation, 2001). Furthermore mediation tends to be less expensive than a trip to court and could help mend the relationship quicker with the other person (Key Bridge Foundation,
2001). The Key Bridge Foundation points out that there are some disadvantages as well with the mediation solution, one of which is
that neither party may be happy with the outcome - and even after going through mediation, a trip to court may still be necessary (Key Bridge Foundation, 2001).
Bellard (2001) writes that community mediation is a good path for people to take when they are involved in a dispute that they cant
