memorandum from the director of a security and safety consulting service which suggested that based on the report that there has been no incidents of employee theft within the ten
companies which require their employees to wear photo identification badges and therefore the security company should recommend use of such identification badges to all clients, there are several aspects within
the argument which should be analyzed before proceeding with the recommendation. Generally there are considered to be two types of reasoning within an argument: deductive and inductive reasoning. Deductive arguments
moved from generalizations as evidence to a particular claim and inductive arguments proceed about statement about particular things to a general conclusion (Boyd, 1995). Within each of these types of
arguments are also certain characteristics. In deductive arguments: if the premises are assumed to be true then the conclusion is also assumed to be true; there is a claim that
the premise provides conclusive grounds for the conclusion; and the conclusions falls within the scope of the evidence. In inductive arguments: the conclusion is not claimed to be an absolute
based on the premises; there is no claim that the premises give conclusive grounds for the conclusion, they only provide some grounds for it; and, the conclusion goes beyond the
scope of evidence (Boyd, 1995). Using the ideas of argumentation, the director of security presented several facts in the memorandum which he believed successfully led to the conclusion that photo
identification badges should be recommended to their clients. When researching the security practices of the ten companies which reported no employee theft, the director was careful not to reach the
conclusion that the wearing of photo identification badges prevents employee thefts, just the inference of such. The argument is sound therefore in their recommendation that use of employee identification badges
