the role of a newly promoted operations manager of a small hospital. The writer, in this scenario, has been asked to create a materials management proposal - in other words,
a proposal that allows for the smooth flow of materials into the hospital, that will best help patient outcomes. A hospital certainly
functions as well as the people inside of it - without the physicians, nurses and allied health professionals around to treat patients, and without the administrative personnel around to ensure
the lights are kept on, patient outcomes would be (in an understatement) far less than satisfactory. However, without the right materials on hand, physicians, nurses, surgical technicians, the hospital board,
and so on, would be unable to complete their jobs effectively. This is where a well-planned materials management proposal, and operations management plan, comes into play.
A well-designed materials management plan ensures there is enough of the right kinds of supplies on hand for the staff to efficiently do its job. This can
range from adhesive to bind wounds, to surgical tools to help in the operating room, to enough pens, clipboards and computers to ensure information can be taken down accurately.
