the all mighty dollar, these poets sought to illustrate what man had lost in the move to the big cities and in leaving behind the nature of the countryside. They
quite often would choose nature themes to illustrate some aspect of human nature. Interestingly enough, in the modern era, there seems to have been a return to these same themes.
Poets such as Walt Whitman, A.R.Ammon, Elizabeth Bishop, James Wright and William Heyen, to name a few, seem to incorporate the nature element into their works, in an attempt to
state many of the same concerns and insights as previous nature poets and against the threat of a materialism that seems to be viewed as a destructive force capable of
claiming the human soul. In James Wrights poem, Blessing, on the surface is about a chance meeting between two people and two grazing ponies. There is nothing very esoteric about
it, if that is how one reads it. The picture is a nice on of a summer day, ponies ripping the grass out, of petting the creatures, then going home.
However, the deeper meaning in his poem, and especially his message about materialism can be found to be at the heart of this poem. One of the ponies, the slender
one, as the poet says, is described as feminine, much as the Earth is always feminized. The poet would like to embrace her, but cannot because she is too big.
This can be read as mans primal urge to be one with the Earth and is a recognition by him of his intrinsic connection to the Earth and its creatures.
The fact that they have to cross barbed wire can also be seen as symbolistic of those things that are manmade that must be breached in order to enter back
