then it was over. Lasting longer than the Korean War did, MASH 4077, at the end of its run, had become an American Icon. But, more than that, it had
pushed the evolution of the sitcom into weighty topics, evolving from a sit com to a dom com, with the final evolution of the series into a two hour made
for television episode. HOW IT ALL BEGAN Dr. Richard Hornberger, finding some time on his hands as he waited for his patients to
come in to his small town practice, decided to write a fictionalized account of his time as a mobile army surgical hospital physician during the Korean War. Viewed through the
perspective of a doctor named, Hawkeye Pierce, the tale unfolds. Most who claim to know Hornberger state that Hawkeye (in the book) was Hornberger(Kalter 1988). The book was picked up
and was made into a movie in 1972, which was not well received. This may well have been because it was just bad timing. The Vietnam War hadnt been over
too long by that time, yet, and many citizens were still very anti establishment. However, those who ventured to see the film were astounded. Here was a war film which
was basically antiwar in its theme. FIRST SEASON The film was not much of a success, but the concept for the film intrigued those in charge of television in
the 1970s. The idea of a group of rag tag doctors, working under the most primitive of conditions, experiencing death and the threat of death on a daily basis,
and having to cope using humor to survive and remain sane, was grist for the television mill. However, the producers were not insensitive to the fact that this was still
