see this term as being synonymous with science fiction, pseudo-science, or wishful thinking. In 1989 two scientists, Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann, stated that they had been successful in fusing
atomic nuclei at room temperature. One would think that such a discovery would be hailed by the scientific community as being one of the most significant discoveries of the twentieth
century. But it wasnt. In fact, shortly after their discovery, the backlash was so extreme that they went into hiding in France and did not reemerge into the public eye
for many years later. What could have caused such a tremendous rancor among the worlds scientists? Cold fusion, in theory, would provide enough useful energy
to power entire cities and would take apparatus the size of a cigarette lighter to produce. If this proves to be true, then a clean power source for the new
century will have been found. Thus, one can see that there is a great deal at stake for this discovery. In brief, what Pons
and Fleishmann observed and theorized about was the fact that units called muons at high speed are able to knock electrons out of their orbits around atoms(Collins 1993). When this
happens, the muons take the place of the electrons and a fusion occurs. However, the process is not complete at this point. It is when the fusion takes place that
the two parts are brought into too close proximity of one another and the atoms shatter. This shattering releases energy, frees the muon, and the process is started again with
other atoms(Collins 1993). Pons and Fleishmann argued that this was the process which would produce cold fusion because all of the factors pointed
