of Labor statistics, this particular profession is in the occupation listed as "Barbers, Cosmetologists and other Personal Appearance Workers" (BLS, 2008). Hairdressers and stylists do more than simply cut and
style hair though - many can color and even advise clients on how to care for their hair at home (BLS, 2008). These people require good stamina, theyre on their
feet for much of the day, except for lunchtime and breaks (BLS, 2008). All states require stylists to be licensed, and to quality for that license, most are required to
graduate from a state-licensed school (BLS, 2008). There is also follow-up training to help workers learn techniques peculiar to each salon (BLS, 2008).
Above all, when theyre first out and on their own, theyre concerned with getting a good enough job, with decent enough tips, so they can continue earning power.
Theyre also concerned with where theyll work - while some salons will take on full-time workers, others will "rent" space; meaning the stylist must pay a monthly stipend to have
a chair in a salon. Because hair is the stylists best advertisement, it stands to reason that the stylist wants the best equipment that can fit into a budget. Therefore,
when it comes to choosing scissors, young stylists just out of school arent going to choose top-of-the line. Nor are they likely to choose the cheapest pair. What theyll want
is a good-quality pair of scissors that can get them through their first few years of earning a living while building their name.
