when an organization is looking to hire someone to fill a marketing position, many times that organization means it has a sales management position to fill. Though sales and advertising are an important part of marketing, they arent, by far, the whole toolkit when it comes to marketing. According to the American Marketing Association, marketing "Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large." Marketing, in other words, is the process of creating a product or service, getting it to the market, and letting the market know about it. Some believe that marketing goes one step further by indicating what the market might need, then developing the product to meet that need. At one time, bringing a product to market did involve simply putting a product out there and encouraging people that they needed it. For example, when the Model T first rolled off the line in the early part of the 20th century, people didnt really NEED a new type of vehicle to get them around - after all, horses did fairly well in that category. But Henry Ford managed to convince the population (through promotion) that the auto-mobile was ultimately faster for getting around and easier to care for than a horse (no pooh to clean up), not to mention more reliable.
