gasoline pump. Explain one possible option that Marathon could take to reduce the time involved with the production process. According to the
video entitled "The Time it Takes to Provide Americas Transportation Fuels," the production process is more than bringing oil up from the ground (or ocean) and getting it directly to
retail gas tanks. Converting the stuff that comes from the earth into a usable product requires close to a month of downstream efforts, not to mention a lot of storage
and transportation. Whats interesting, however, is that Marathon isnt relying on better technologies to get rid of one of those downstream methods, which could conceivably speed up crude oil conversion
to gasoline. Some years ago (2008, to be exact), Lummus Technology executive vice president Dan McCarthy pointed out that the largest single challenge
facing the downstream service/supply sector involved the increase in demand for "heavy hydrocarbon upgrading" in oil production, meaning a great deal of pressure was going placed on the entire oil
supply chain. The introduction of newer technologies such as Catalytic Crude Upgrading, however, is starting to shave time off the entire process (New technologies, 2008).
Another thing Marathon can change is its storage methods - right now it really doesnt have any and must store its crude in underground facilities. Adding storage/warehousing
to its logistics could make the crude more accessible and could, perhaps, help Marathon somewhat speed the process of conversion. Finally, Marathon can
increase its refining techniques. Getting oil out of the ground is one thing - but a lot of times, what stalls the process is refining it so it can be
