A 10 page research paper that examines the links between MAOA, as a genetic factor, and the development of conduct disorder. There is a large body of empirical research that connects the development of conduct disorder to childhood maltreatment (Fergusson, Boden and Horwood, 2008; Jaffee, et al, 2004). However, a continuing debate addresses the question as to whether or not conduct disorder is a psychopathology or the consequence of abusive and/or neglectful parents. A recent and growing body of evidence indicates that the causes of conduct disorder are multifaceted, as there is evidence that indicates a genetic predisposition to conduct disorder, particularly in regards to MAOA activity studies. are typical among many adolescents (Young, et al, 2006, p. 1012). In the vast majority of cases, this sort of antiauthoritarian behavior is purely transient and ceases by the time
of early adulthood; however, in some teens, these patterns of behavior become entrenched and precede forms of adult antisocial behavior as well as patterns of comorbid substance use problems (Young,
et al, 2006). Childhood maltreatment is a "potent risk factor" in regards to the subsequent development of "aggressive and criminal behavior, although many young victims develop normally" (Young, et
al, 2006, p. 1012). A longitudinal study, conducted by Caspi, et al, in 2002, utilized a cohort of young adult men who had been followed since early childhood. Specifically, this
study was designed to explore the fact that while some maltreated children exhibit conduct disorder as teens and adults, others do not (Sluzki, 2007). First of all, this study confirmed
the correlation between incidences of maltreatment and increased risk for antisocial behavior (Sluzki, 2007). The Caspi, et al, study suggests that maltreatment that occurs in the "first decade of life"
significantly increases the risk for antisocial outcomes, such as "conduct disorder, aggression, (and) anti-social personality" (Young, et al, 2006, p. 1012). However, this study also showed that the risk for
