The company sells financial products geared toward wealth creation. It espouses a somewhat traditional investment strategy that is short on risk and heavy on long-term holds - though as well
see later on in this paper, what the company says and what it does seem to be two different things. But the company has been around for a long time,
since the 18th century. Stock Price History: As of August 17, 2009, the stock traded at $19.44 (Manulife Financial Corporation, 2009).
During the past 52 weeks, the stock traded at a high of $37.55 per share, and at a low of $6.94 per share (Manulife Financial Corporation, 2009). Much like other
financial companies in its industry, Manulife suffered at the hands of Wall Street late last year. Business Strategy: The company says
it manages funds through low-risk methods. However, a class-action suit brought against the company in U.S. District Court this past summer states something quite different (Insurer Faces Suit, 2009). The
suit, filed on behalf of those who bought Manulife securities between March 28, 2008 and June 22, 2009, alleges Manulife made "false and misleading statements" in terms of managing and
controlling risk (Insurer Faces Suit, 2009). According to the suit, however, the company (in opposition of its own risk strategy) didnt
