This would seem to be the prevailing themes in Viktor Frankls book, Mans Search for Meaning, and the movie, A Man for All Seasons by Zinnemann. Victor Frankl spent three years in Auschwitz during WWII. In his book, Mans Search for Meaning, he shares his experiences which lead him to conclude that: "Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked. In a word, each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible"(Frankl 172). Given this, then, meaning is the ability to deal with life in the present moment, discovering ones unique inner talents, and to trust overall in an ultimate and larger picture, of which we are a small part. In Mans Search for Meaning, Frankl wrote, "Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual"(Frankl, 122). Applying this to his early experiences, one can easily see that living in the moment was the only thing that someone in that situation could hope to do, and to turn inward, losing the desire for the outward. Zinnemans Man for All Seasons would seem to echo this same theme. This movie also asks the question: Who are you? Do you define your life or do you let life define you?
