I have read a great deal about diversity and culture and managing both in order to get along. Yet even with the articles and
research Id read, I had little idea that the class in which I was in provided a real-life experience as to how the group I was with would deal with
diversity. My particular group had four members from Britain, the Netherlands, Australia and myself, the lone person from India. In addition to my different looks (I was dark-skinned, versus my
lighter-skinned group members), my culture, background and even religious beliefs were vastly different. Because of that, I did feel some slight discrimination against me.
For example, the first day I walked into class was actually the class second day - Id been ill the first day and wasnt feeling too great on
day two, so I had to leave early. Nothing was said about any of it, but I sensed that the perception of me wasnt too positive. In addition to being
of a different ethnicity, Im also the youngest in the group, and this also likely colored some perceptions. But I had some perceptions too. Clawson (2006) defined perceptions as what
is left in our awareness after we filter out; and I had to agree with her assessments after going through that first day/second day of class.
I had more reason to believe in Clawsons definitions the next day, when I met the group I was going to work with. I didnt feel
