Leadership has the vision and is responsible for motivating the troops (i.e., employees), to reach that vision (Leadership vs. Management). Managers, on the other hand, are responsible for carrying out
the steps that lead to the vision (Leadership vs. Management). Bobinksky further points out that, according to business gurus Peter Drucker and Warren Bennis, "leadership is doing the right things;
management is doing things right." Leaders can manage, certainly, and managers can lead - but interchanging the two is a mistake. Leaders
- and managers -- also need to rely on politics, and discretion, if they hope to move plans into reality (Espedal 96). In other words, managers, as much as leaders,
need to be a politician in order to get things done, and to move the troops toward an organizational goal. How come
a manager must be a politician? Isnt the managers primary goal to slog through the day-to-day tasks? Well, yes and no. We already mentioned in the first paragraph of this
paper that managers could be leaders. But managers also need to know how to play the game of politics. Lets examine the
characteristics of a successful politician. Though most politicians these days are considered to be dishonest and only out for their own gain, there are certain qualities that politicians have that
