Any human relationship can be difficult to explain; but perhaps one of the most difficult to explain is the relationship between an employee and his or her boss. Why is
it that one employee does well with consistent compliments and praise, while another needs to be yelled at in order to produce? Why is it that some managers believe in
"management by intimidation," while others believe that intimidating workers is the best way to get those workers out the door? And why is it that senior management at some companies,
in an effort to boost the bottom line, will decimate a workforce through layoffs and voluntary retirements, while others agonize over firing even one person?
The answer lies in two words: Management theory. A scan of the business literature demonstrates there are a
series of management theories that one can pick and choose from. There is the collaborative theory, which states that the employee-boss relationship is more of a partnership, one that is
designed to meet an organizations goals and objectives. Then there is the top-down theory, which states that management doesnt want to hear any feedback from employees, and any employee that
