contractor in the world, behind Lockheed Martin (Daniels, 2010). Needless to say, there is more to manufacturing jets and military vehicle systems than
putting a bunch of people on the factory floor and ordering them to slap the things together. Boeing, with its thousands of employees worldwide, relies on careful planning and vision
from CEO Jim McNerney Jr., and the capability of an executive team, front line managers, and employees to take McNerneys plans and visions and turn them into reality.
But what, exactly, is the planning function of management? Planning is considered the first, and foremost, function of management (its followed by organizing, leading and
controlling). But planning is the basis; the framework of management - as Erven puts it "planning is concerned with the future impact of todays decisions."
Why is planning so important? For one thing, the other three functions of management spring from it - its somewhat hard to organize resources, lead an organization and
determine how well its doing without an initial plan. The plan provides goals, objectives and other activities that help drive the controlling function, for example (Erven). If a plan calls
for a particular goal, then the organization understands where it needs to be in the future from where it is at the present time.
