Once upon a time, management meant telling people what to do, and insisting they do it in a certain way, without argument. Some organizations these days still follow that style of management (know as classical theory). But during the past half-century or so, other styles of management from the "humanist" school have cropped up. But lets take a look at the classical style of management first, as this is one of the oldest styles of management in the business arsenal. This particular style of management emerged during the 19th century, partly as an outgrowth of military command. As time went on, sociologists such as Henri Fayol and Frederick Taylor lauded this style, pointing out that it was the surest way to efficiency. Classical management theory, also known as classical leadership theory, focuses on topics such as "chain-of-command," and basically three levels of management (upper management or executive management, middle management and supervisors) (Concepts of classical management theories, 2008). The leadership style in such an organization is autocratic (in other words, "my way or the highway") with little input from subordinates. Division of labor is also a part of this particular style of management. Classical leadership theory/classical management is still in use today - but unfortunately, this style of management tends to make organizations very slow to react to fast-changing environments.
