political ramifications of the past handful of years, healthcare organizations have been squeezed by growing costs on the one hand, and needing to honor compensation and staffing commitments on the
other. On the other side, healthcare labor has felt somewhat taken for granted by management, which has led to the drive for members of labor to form and/or join unions.
Though there are good reasons for healthcare labor to affiliate with unions, there are concerns among many healthcare organizational stakeholders that such
groups will create more problems than they solve. Some believe unions will destroy faith-based health care. Others points out that the added layer of union representatives will represent a time
consuming, costly, control-modifying process when it comes to structuring agreements and new worker contracts. Management is interested in more flexibility and in promoting and creating direct, positive relationships with employees.
The formation of unions, its believed, would stand in the way of this particular goal. Furthermore, many managers also perceive that unions have special interests outside of the best interests
of the worker. But healthcare workers more and more believe that they need some way to make management see what activities such
as cost-cutting measures and healthcare reform are doing to then. Working conditions are becoming more stressful as staff is cut and more is demanded of nurses technicians and physicians; and
this is only likely to get worse as more people obtain insurance through the Affordable Patient Care Act of 2010 (provided parts of that act arent repealed in the coming
years). Employees who believe their concerns arent being heard or acknowledged by management are employees who are more likely to seek out forming unions and obtaining collective bargaining power -
