Management has three definitions attached to it; such as the conducting or supervision of business, the "use of means to accomplish an end" and a body of people who direct a project or organization (Management, 2010). Administration, in the meantime, is defined as the performance of executive duties (in other words "management,"); the execution of public affairs or a collection of people who administer, or direct (Administration, 2010). And yes, this is very similar to the "management" definition outlined above. Finally, we have organization - which can be defined as a person (or a group of people) that are "intentionally organized" or brought together, to accomplish a specific set of goals (McNamara, 2008). (define these terms). Given these definitions, its somewhat obvious why - and how - theyve been used interchangeably. But there have been those who believe that, while the words and their meanings are similar, they arent necessarily interchangeable. Back in the late 1960s, Professor J. Boeddewyn at New York University examined the similarities between the terms, pointing out that, for example, administration and management had to be examined together, as they covered similar grounds. Administration theory and management theory approach the same subject matter, though they go at it from different directions, he noted (Boeddewyn, 1969). If we examine the definition of "management" from the viewpoint of management literature, these definitions point out that real-life managers interact with their peers, their subordinates, their organization, society and the economy (Boeddewyn, 1969).
