this time. After the introductory paragraph, the student will want to concentrate on fleshing out the body of the paper. If the introductory paragraph has been constructed well, the
salient points will already be there, waiting for elaboration. For example, the introductory paragraph states that Diedrich Hessling embodied the nationalistic movement during the Wilhelmine Era. One needs to now
become more specific and mention exactly how Hessling embodied this notion. The first way in which Hessling reflects the political factors that caused Germans to so readily embrace nationalism. The
time period is shortly before the onset of World War I. The Kaiser has incited his people into a passionate fury based on misplaced patriotism and a desire for revenge.
For his part, then, Diedrich becomes involved politically by becoming a thug who uses his wealth and power to subdue and belittle any who stood in his way of personal
gain. The mans character is shown to be quite small when he comments to himself after he buys a friend a movie ticket: "It was the first time he had
ever spent money on another human being" (Mann 15). Next, the student will want to comment on the economical ways in which Mann portrayed this character as symbolic of those
just like him. During this era, those who owned factories, came from wealthy families, and were well off thought little of those beneath them socially or economically. Diedrich and
