after U.S. Secretary of Commerce Malcolm Baldrige, is an annual award given to a U.S. company that most enhances "competitiveness, quality and productivity" when it comes to production or service
(Baldrige National Quality Program, 2009). The award is presented by the President of the United States that are judged to be outstanding in the seven areas of leadership, strategic planning,
customer/market focus, measurement/analysis/knowledge management, workforce focus, process management and results (Baldrige National Quality Program, 2009). The process of being considered for the Baldrige award is a long one, and involves
a companys ability to examine its operations and culture so it can determine how quality management can be integrated into its strategic goals. There is a great deal of paperwork
in filling out a Baldrige application. The committee is very meticulous when it comes to information, and it wants just about every detail pertaining to the companys operations, leadership and
management. Furthermore, the results are checked with judges who actually show up on site to examine, first-hand, how operations work (and to ensure that there wasnt any fudging going on
during the application process). Those that are presented with this award have made total quality management and continuous improvement an important part
of their operations and activities. The two aspects that are considered with the Baldrige National Award, especially as they pertain to strategic planning are continuous improvement and measurement. Preparing for
the Baldrige Award, therefore, is not a one-shot deal. It involves continues feedback, quality and improvement. The Baldrige Award is simply acknowledgement that a company is relying on this.
