Shaw and Bertolt Brecht are masters at doing so in their own way. Shaw relies on wry sarcasm and kind of an "in-your-face" scenario, while Brecht goes a little deeper
and more seriously, relying on "alienation" to ensure that his audiences dont become too close to their characters. However, the results are the same -- an eye-opening, if someone uncomfortable
and not too flattering view of human nature. This is especially apparent in the works "Major Barbara," which was penned by Shaw,
and Mother Courage and her Children, which Brecht wrote. This paper will compare both works and discuss how they evaluate and portray society in vastly different ways. Mainly, both plays
claim that war is the way to keep society humming. "Major Barbara" tends to slap the audience in the face on views
of morality, religion and even social engineering. Centering around the upright (and some might say "uptight") Salvation Army worker Major Barbara, the play draws a definite distinction between Barbaras morality
and that of her father, the military industrialist who earned his millions through war. The play ends up pointing out that its the military industry, rather than religion or any
kind of societal action, that forms society and provides the means for salvation. While Barbara fights on the side of good and right - but Shaw structures the Salvation Army
shelter as kind of a shabby, awful location, while portraying Undershafts Perivalee Saint Andrews as almost a paradise, in which men are redeemed and poverty eliminated.
