whole world has revolved around a woman he comes to know is a man. As one author notes, "M. Butterfly is based both on author Hwangs feelings about the cultural
stereotype of Madame Butterfly and vaguely on a true story, a French diplomat caught spying for his Chinese lover--who he claimed he thought was a woman" (Stratton butterfly.shtml). Hwangs play
is different from the original opera titled "Madame Butterfly" but it uses the element of that opera in the characterization of Gallimard. This is evident when Gallimard, in the beginning
of the play, states, "in order for you to understand what I did and why, I must introduce you to my favorite opera: Madam Butterfly. By Giacomo Puccini" (Hwang
NA). In the following paper we examine the play of Hwangs and illustrate why the original play was important as an element or theme. In many ways we will find
that Hwangs adaptation, as well as his use of the original opera, was presented out of a need to address the diverse, not stereotypical, culture of the Asian people.
M. Butterfly and Madame Butterfly The original "Madame Butterfly" is a story about a Chinese woman who is a less than perfect woman who gives up her life of
"sin" because she falls in love with an American. The American uses her, marries her, and then essentially sumps her to go back to America. He never took her seriously
and always believed that she was nothing but a woman of her culture, a woman who would do anything a man wanted and was essentially an object that was of
