The disease in total "puts at risk more than a billion people in more than 80 countries" (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008). The disease is largely confined to the Third World, with one-third of those afflicted living in India, another third living in Africa, and the remainder in "south Asia, the Pacific and the Americas" (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008). In those areas of the world where the disease is already well-established, it is on the increase (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008). The disease is transmitted by mosquito bites, which transfer the "thread-like, parasitic filarial worms Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi" (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008). The worms lodge in the human lymphatic system and have a life span of 4-6 years, during which time they produce "millions of immature microfilariae (minute larvae) that circulate in the blood" (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008). Scientists are still not completely sure how the disease develops, since it is usually acquired in childhood but doesnt manifest until the person is an adult (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008). Some people who are infected never manifest the symptoms outwardly, though they may have "hidden lymphatic pathology and kidney damage as well" (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008). The asymptomatic form of the disease, meaning the disease without symptoms, can be diagnosed by the presence of thousands or even millions of microfilariae in the bloodstream; the adult worms are found in the lymphatic system (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008). The disease is chronic, meaning theres no cure for it; when symptoms manifest, they usually appear in adults, not children; and more often in men then in women (Lymphatic Filariasis, 2008).
