reference Conrads Heart of Darkness where Marlow says that he hates the idea of lying. That said, when asked to relay Kurtzs last words to his intended, Marlow does lie and claims that his last word was her name. Essentially, Marlow does not tell the truth. Why is this the case? Also, a student asks: "How does this moment reflect the Western portrayal of colonisation?" First, it is important to understand how Marlow embraces the idea of lying. In the work, he remarks: "You know I hate, detest, and cant bear a lie, not because I am straighter than the rest of us, but simply because it appalls me. There is a taint of death, a flavour of mortality in lies--which is exactly what I hate and detest in the world--what I want to forget" (Conrad 44). Here, Marlow talks about lying in general. He does hate the lie as a concept, but he is unlike Kant who sees lying as unacceptable in any circumstance. For Immanuel Kant, the lying promise is not sanctioned. That is, even in dire circumstances, lying is always wrong. Now, for Marlow, he hates the idea of lying just as people today do not appreciate lies. If one lies on his or her resume, and the employer finds out, the employer will feel wronged. Usually, it ends in the employees dismissal. The employee may feel that the lie was insignificant. Yet, these kinds of lies are unacceptable to many law abiding citizens. Lying in society is not unique. People tell little lies each day. They may lie by omission, or by not telling someone something pertinent. They withhold information that may be construed as a lie. A wife may have had an affair but hides the fact.
