October 31, 1517, Luther posted a challenge on the church door at Wittenberg to debate 95 theological issues (Christ the King Church, 2003). Luthers intention was not to start a
separate church organization, but rather to reform the Roman Catholic Church so that its teachings would conform more precisely with the teachings of scripture. On studying the Bible, Luther particularly
objected to the Catholic Churchs teaching that a Christian should trust in Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the saints (Bucher, 2003). Luther felt that this policy was flatly contradicted
by scripture. However, rather than consider Luthers criticisms of the church, he and his followers were excommunicated by the pope (Forell, 2002). What started as an academic debate escalated
into a religious war, which is known as the Reformation. (Lutherans still celebrate the Reformation on October 31). However, it should be noted that many Lutherans still consider themselves
to be a reforming movement within the Christian Church rather than as a separatist movement (Christ the King Church, 2003). Snyder (1997) discusses this point, arguing that "true Lutheranism" is
not a denomination, but is rather a confession. He states that "true Lutherans" believe in the true faith of the Holy catholic (that is, universal) and apostolic church, which has
always existed whether it was called "Israel or Christian" (Snyder, 1997). Luther argued that it was not he who had broken away from the Catholic Church, but rather it was
the Roman Church that had broken away from the teachings of the ancient Christian Church through false teachings and practice (Bucher, 2003). However, a number of separate churches
