are still evident in contemporary Christianity, Martin Luther (1483-1546) and Desiderus Erasmus (1466-1536). Biographical comparison Erasmus: Born n Rotterdam in 1466, Erasmus was illegitimate, and therefore never knew much
about his family background (Greer and Lewis 342). However, it is known that his father was a member of the middle class and a priest at the time of his
sons birth and there is also very little known concerning his mother (Greer and Lewis 342). As a boy, he was sent off to be schooled by the Brethren of
the Common Life (Greer and Lewis 342). When Erasmus was old enough to leave school, he was persuaded to enter an Augustinian monastery, where he received little in the way
of formal instruction, but was free to read whatever he pleased. Historian Johan Huizinga indicates that Erasmus once wrote that his mother
died when he was around age twelve or thirteen; however, records indicate, with virtual certainty, that Erasmus was around age 17 when his mother died, as her death did not
occur prior to 1483 (Huizinga 5). This observation leads Huizinga to comment that Erasmuss "sense of chronology was always remarkably ill developed" (Huizinga 5). After securing a release from his
monastic vows, at the age of 30, Erasmus journeyed to the University of Paris and studied theology, completing this course of study (Greer and Lewis 342). From that point on,
his life was devoted to research, writing, and visiting the major European centers of learning. Erasmus endeavored to use the "new linguistic and textual skills developed by the Italian
humanists as a means for establishing a truer Bible," as it was his desire to "cut away the false growths of medieval religious practice" and, in doing so, restore a
