Lung cancer is just one type of cancer but it is one of the deadliest. While there are numerous factors linked to an individuals propensity to develop lung cancer
(Goovaerts, 2010), the most predominant cause of lung cancer the world over is cigarette smoking (Ahmed, Raja, Raghuwanshi and Meenakumari, 2010).
Smoking can, of course, be a contributing factor in numerous diseases. Its impacts to the lungs, in part, can include asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung
cancer. The histological impacts vary more by degree than by nature for each of these diseases. The reasons that smoking is such a critical factor in the lungs
are many. Smoke contains a mixture of compounds that are harmful to lung tissue. Many of these compounds are carcinogenic. These include "polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including
the classical carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), and the nicotine-derived tobacco-specific nitrosamine, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK)" (Camino Medical Group, 2004). Ozone is a compound of concern in
cigarette smoke as well. Ozone affects respiratory function as well as does carbon monoxide. Ozone, however, is particularly alarming in its effects on the cellular structure of the
respiratory system. It actually burns though the cell walls of the lungs just minutes after entering the body. Cellular fluid escapes into the lungs. Breathing becomes rapid
and difficult. The ciliated cells of the nose and airways are destroyed and replaced with thicker-bodied abnormal squamos cells. The lungs stiffen and in some cases the ability
to breath is very much reduced. Cigarette smoke results in the oxidation of cellular membranes. The free radicals and other damaging compounds
