History and Context In examining the history of the Lukes Gospel, a pertinent issue is who, precisely authored this scriptural account. Based on internal evidence from the gospel itself, it is clear that the author spoke Greek, was Christian and did not specify his identity.1 However, Tertullian identifies the author of Luke as a companion of Paul, rather than one of Jesus apostles.2 The Muratorian Fragment also identifies Luke, "a physician and associate of Paul," as the Gospels author, and the "Old Gospel Prologues," likewise, indicates that Luke, "a Syrian of Antioch, a doctor and follower of Paul," as the author responsible for the Third Gospel.3 Scholarship places the date of the gospels creation as occurring after 70 AD, also noting that Marcion adopted a "mutilated form of Luke" as central to his Pauline canon.4 Therefore, the majority of scholars date the Gospels origin as occurring between 80 and 100 AD.5 The traditional scholarship has been that Luke was written for a "single Lukan community in a particular locale"; however, it is now believed that the target audience was much broader and compassed the entirety of Gentile Christians living in the Mediterranean world.6 The evangelist writing Luke specifies that he is writing "that his readers may have certainty (asphalia) about ...
