very nature of a humane and compassionate woman. Mott believed there is nothing of a more inequitable nature than the concept of slavery.
Oppressing one from living a free life that is inherently granted to each and every person could not be any more of an injustice, for it goes against the
very grain of the Constitution. Mott brought into question that the United States of America was truly built upon a foundation of democracy and liberty for each and every
citizen, particularly in light of the quest for abolition and the efforts of this reform movement to make it a reality. It is by way of this infrastructure of
democratic rule, Mott argued more than a century ago, that the country has been able to enjoy and pursue the various constitutional rights inherent with being an American. In
a country where the people are voluntarily offered the freedoms of democracy and liberty, Mott believed democracy was not merely the privilege of the informed and the involved; however, if
one is to be informed and involved in the democratic process, one would have to have some familiarity with the fragile composition of individual freedom and democracy. Mott - who,
because of her gender, was not originally allowed in to a London antislavery conference in 1840 (Dedman-Rengstorf 18) - worked together with such notable people as Frederick Douglass in order
