the years that followed the rape. Her work is very open and very real and very vulnerable as she offers hope, perhaps, or at least understanding for those who must
deal with rape in one way or another. The following paper examines how relatives and friends and others react to Alices rape. Lucky In discussing reactions and how
those reactions helped or hurt Alice we first look at the title of the book. It is named "Lucky" because the police told Alice she was lucky she was only
raped. This is because in the same spot, not long before her rape, a woman was killed. There is a sense of irony about this title for Alice surely could
not envision herself as lucky to only have been raped. Such reactions, in society and from people around rape victims, are often damaging to the individual who was harmed. Their
situation is ranked with that of a fender bender or losing a credit card. It does not acknowledge the deep damage done by rape, and also indicates that society, as
a whole, has no idea what rape is like if one has not experienced it. This is primarily the entire foundation of the story for people do not know
how to react, what to say, or what to do to help such people if they themselves have never experienced rape. And, even in the end, as we see Alice
attempting to help a friend who has been raped, we see that even those who have been raped do not necessarily know how to help other victims if they themselves
