the company is doing rather well financially, it has had setbacks and even in recent years has endured embarrassing lawsuits. For example, the company was the target of a
Y2K class-action lawsuit that alleges they should have known that their office communications products would be vulnerable to the year 2000 computer bug (Lavelle B01). For a company involved
in creating software, such a charge is difficult to shake, especially due to the competitive nature of the industry. II. Performance Lucent Technologies Inc. trades on the
New York Stock Exchange and competes with other well known firms. Nortel Networks Corporation for example is one of the worlds largest communications equipment makers and in early January,
2000 shined as compared with Lucent (Taylor PG). It was a bad time for Lucent then, as its shares went as low as 15-14/16 on one day in January
only to end at 53-3/16 later on (PG). Of course, a bad day in January is not representative of the companys overall experience. However, the example does provide proof of
