It appears that she does not think that gender and sex should be separated, but should be shared in the experience of live. The rule-based, linear, structured, directive and assertive system of sexuality and gender can have various designated values. In this particular book, the penis is designated to have value greater than zero and greater than any multiples. Women are not anything because they do not have a penis. There is more to women than lack of a penis which equates to nothingness. Our culture seems to give privileges to the penis, which does away with multiples, which includes the female body, the feminine gender and female sexuality. There is a perceived oneness of the male body, the masculine gender and male sexuality. This creates the idea of phallogocentrism which sets up a simple binary opposition, that any thing not male has less value. The French Feminists of which Luce Irigaray is one challenge the idea of phallogocentrism and wish to explore the possibilities that any idea of excess should include not only female gender and sexuality, but male gender and sexuality as well. Irigaray also feels that this idea of excess impacts the perceptions of heterosexuality and homosexuality. French Feminist thought is that the difference between the genders has an impact on sexuality and further, if you use the penis as a metaphor for gender and sexuality, then sexuality is an oneness not a multiplicity. There is only one sexual organ, the penis. The penis is the once source of sexual pleasure and the penis is the one idea of sexual desire - male sexual desire.
