The Lowell System refers to a “method of factory management” that developed in regards to the operation of the United States’ first textile mills, which were built in Waltham and Lowell, Massachusetts in the early part of the nineteenth century (Foner and Garraty, 1991). consisted of a "paternalistic approach to management," which involved strict supervision and moralistic rules. With his factories and the Lowell System, Francis Cabot Lowell transformed the nature of textile
manufacturing and, in so doing, made a tremendous contribution to the United States early industrialization (Francis Lowell, 2001). During the War of 1812, which stopped all trade with England,
Lowell became convinced that the US needed to have it own mills and, to accomplish this purpose, Lowell formed the Boston Manufacturing Company in 1813. He relied on his memory
of factories that he had seen in England to design the power looms for his factory and he also added improvements to the English design that resulted in faster operation
(Francis Lowell, 2001). Lowell opened his first place in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1814, which was the first factory in the word that "converted raw cotton into finished cloth at a
single location" (Francis Lowell, 2001). Contemporary commentary on the way in which Lowells first factory seemed to spring up overnight indicates that the fascination that this development generated. John Greenleaf
