an economic catastrophe in the making, it is an affront to The American spirit of independence and ingenuity. Our petroleum based lifestyle, in fact, is an affront to this
spirit as well. Consuming approximately twenty million barrels of petroleum daily, the US is one of the most energy intensive countries in the world yet we satisfy very little
of our energy requirements domestically (Kasoff, 2007). Although we produce eight million barrels of petroleum a day (Kasoff, 2007), we import an estimated thirteen million barrels of petroleum daily
(Roberts, 2008). Much ado is made by politicians and others regarding the importance of moving towards alternative energy sources. While such a move is critical, it is often
regarded as something that is so high-tech that we must depend on big business to come up with a solution. In reality, however, there are low-tech options that are
available to many of us right now. All we have to do to take advantage of those low-tech options is to once again begin to value good ole American
ingenuity. While prices of petroleum based products have dropped rather radically over the past few months, the exorbitantly high prices we
have been forced to pay at the pump in that last year remind us that depending on foreign oil is a no-win situation. High energy costs affect all of
us. For those of us that must travel to a job they are of particular concern. Those in the lower income groups seem to be hurt the most
