This 17 page paper looks at the problems faced when employees have a low level of morale and low levels of motivation. potential to add a great deal of value through productivity and the input of intellectual capital. There is a wealth of evidence which demonstrates motivated and satisfied employees are likely
to highly productive, while by comparison those who are dissatisfied and unhappy will perform at a lower level of productivity (Buchanan and Huczynski, 2010, p23). Furthermore, dissatisfied employees are also
more likely to display negative behavioural traits such as lateness, absenteeism or in extreme cases sabotage and theft, which will have additional direct ands indirect costs for the employer (Loncar
and Singh, 2010, p470; Daley, 1992, p233; Beehr and Gupta, 1978, p73). With these divergent characteristics based on the variable of employee morale and satisfaction it is unsurprising the issue
of motivation has been subject to many studies with a focus on how positive practices may be adopted and maintained within organizations. At all times this can be seen as
an important subject; with the need for organizations to remain efficient, but the importance may be seen to increase at times, such as recessions, when there are increasing negative pressures
on businesses to improve their efficiency. It has also been shown that during difficult economic times there is likely to be an increased level of dissatisfaction and low morale in
employees, possibly related to personal as well as work situations. In 2011 there appears to be high level of employee dissatisfaction. In research undertaken with a sample of 5000
households, it was found that more than 50% disliked their jobs, in the under 25 age group of dissatisfaction was highest, with only 39% of respondents indicating that they were
satisfied with their job (Levoy, 2011, p40). It was also noted that many employees would ensure that the dissatisfaction levels remained in private, and would not inform the employer (Levoy,
