Since obesity leads to so many fatal diseases and conditions, many of these individuals decide to diet. The question is: What diet should they follow? Low fat versus low carb diets has been a source of controversy for four decades. B. Motivational Link: We often draw conclusions and base beliefs and opinions on what we hear and see from the media, from officials, and even from friends and families. These reports are seldom unbiased. C. Purpose Statement: Today, I hope to provide evidence from the literature that will shed light on this controversy in terms of which diet is more successful and which is healthier. D. Preview Statement: Research studies do not agree with each other regarding the question. Some say that people lose the same amount of weight regardless of which diet they follow. Others say one or the other is more successful. There are other consideration when comparing which of these types of diets is better for your health. II. Body A. The low carbohydrate diet was popularized by the publication of Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution in 1972. It was at about the same time that Americans were just accepting the official notices that saturated fat which is in meat and dairy products was really bad for you. 1) Atkins argued that it was all the carbohydrates in peoples diets that caused them to gain weight.
