of romance and love. In this story there are two individuals who are clearly at odds with one another. They both have ultimately vowed that they will never be fools
in falling love and marrying and as such they both claim they will remain single. But, at the same time they are constantly bantering with one another in a way
that is suggestive of hate, but also very suggestive of love. The following paper examines how hate is the first sign of love in the relationship between Beatrice and Benedick.
Love is Hate: Much Ado About Nothing As mentioned, both Benedick and Beatrice are determined that they will never be fools, fall in love and be married. They
feel that their freedoms and their identity is too strong for such weakness and they have clearly both lost their hearts in the past, with hints that they had a
relationship together in the past. Shakespeare clearly presents these two in a very humorous manner, indicating how much they dislike, even hate, one another. This is introduced early on
when someone is discussing Benedick with Beatrice. She states, in relationship to his character, "In our last conflict four of his five wits went halting off, and now is the
whole man governed with one: so that if he have wit enough to keep himself warm, let him bear it for a difference between himself and his horse; for it
is all the wealth that he hath left, to be known a reasonable creature" (Shakespeare I i). In this one clearly sees how Beatrice thinks very little of Benedick. She
is ridiculing him and ultimately saying that he doesnt even have enough intelligence to keep himself warm. Beatrice does not stop there either. She is not afraid to tell
