an emotions that is often seen as illogical and changeable. However, there are many types of love, these are shown to us by Willa Cather in her book O Pioneers.
Here we have love that is lasting as well as love that is unwise. The story concerns the hearts of the characters and they way they love. We can argue
that there is a message regarding the follies and dangers of youthful passion and the way this these are likely to result in tragedy. But as the heart grows and
wisdom enters, passion may turn to love. We are also shown a model of behaviour where we may argue that the female characters are able to define themselves outside of
the normal youthful passions, able to define themselves in a fashion more often associated with the male gender (Bender, 2002). In this,
often unrated book, with more attention paid to the later My Antonia, looks at the lives of some young pioneers. We may argue that their lives are not those that
we may expect, and that added duties and responsibly change their outlook, with the need for both hard work as well as emotional release. This may be seen as giving
the different types of love a balance. This book was published in 1913, a time when equality was only the dream of
a few. However, it is set many years before, with the story of a pioneering family. The father has died in his struggle to tame the land, a struggle
that would not have occurred had it not been for the love of the land, and also his love for his family, trying to find a better life for them.
