in the theater, but he is also one of the most important existentialist philosophers of the twentieth century. Existentialism is the philosophical position that a person has free choice and
that they are responsible for the shape and direction of their lives, based upon the choices they make. It therefore does away with ideas of fate, pre-destination, Gods will and
the rest, and puts ones fate squarely in ones own hands. That can certainly be seen in the three characters in No Exit, who have wound up in hell because
of their actions. But it can also be argued that Sartres bleak look at the afterlife also asks us to consider love, and how powerful it can be. In
the closed environment of that terrible room in hell, love blossoms and takes many forms including sympathy; but it also creates hatred, conflict and violence. The three main characters, Garcin,
Inez and Estelle, all have violent pasts, but the violence may be said to stem from love, though the love that is portrayed is not the kind that dreams are
made of. Garcin is damned because of the way he treated his wife; Inez, who is a lesbian, had an affair with her cousins wife and when he was killed
by a tram, Inez took her in (Sartre). But Inez tortured Florence by constantly reminding her of their triangle: "I used to remind her every day: Yes, my pet, we
killed him between us" (Sartre 26). The sordid affair apparently preyed on Florences mind, because one night she got out of bed and turned on the gas, killing them both
(Sartre). This explains why Inez was looking for Florence when she came into the room. Estelle, who was married, had an affair and killed the baby that resulted from it
