seldom without conflicts and problems with intimacy. The following examination of three short stories illustrate a small portion how love works within relationships. These works are Love in L.A., by
Dagoberto Gilb, Eveline by James Joyce, and A Worn Path by Eudora Welty. Love in L.A. is a story of hard edges and people who pass each other,
but dont touch. Its a story that shows how the cultural emphasis on things has left people devoid of the social skills that allows human beings to connect. Jake, a
two-bit thug with adolescent delusions of grandeur. The story opens with Jake driving on the L.A. freeway. He is so wrapped up in his own daydreams that he rear-ends the
car ahead of him. His first reaction is to drive away, but doesnt. Instead he stops and meets the driver of the other car, a beautiful girl named Mariana. His
first interaction with Mariana, however, is to con her concerning her car, assuring her that he will pay for the damage. The story is full of instances where Jake is
on the verge of doing the right thing, but simply cannot bring himself to be legitimate despite the fact that he is highly attracted to Mariana. What comes through
in Gilbs narrative is that Jake really doesnt know how to be anything other then deceptive and manipulative, the small-time con artist that he is. Hes geared like so much
of L.A. culture, to associating happiness with things, rather then people. This is shown by the way he obsess on his dream car, as if to ownt this one object
would render life perfect. This story shows that "Love in L.A." is most often directed towards Americas hedonistic lifestyle rather then in coping with real intimacy. Similarly, James Joyces
