However, at one point in the story a man does come into her life, thus presenting the reader with an aspect of love in the life of Emily. The following paper examines this story and discusses how it could be considered a love story. Emily" Story, a Love Story As mentioned, this story is about a woman who is, in the beginning, ultimately controlled by her father. He believes that no man is good enough for her and her social status. As such he turns away any possible suitor she may have had, leaving Emily to take care of her father until the day he dies. She has been so confined by her father that she refuses to accept the fact that he is dead. When she does finally accept this fact she moves on with her life, somewhat, remaining the caretaker of the house, and remaining a recluse. After many years of such an existence a man comes into her life and the town talks about Emily and this man. It is presumed that Homer is living with Emily, which is certainly not proper but the town accepts this because there is sympathy for Emily who is a sad and lonely woman. "At first we were glad that Miss Emily would have an interest, because the ladies all said, Of course a Grierson would not think seriously of a Northerner, a day laborer.
