who could well be described as many things, possessed of many characteristics, weaknesses, and passions. As a human being, and a complex human being, one can see many attributes and
thus argue in many different ways. In respects to his actions and his history there are many who believe that he was a traitor to the country, if not a
madman. Some say he only pursued his fights for selfish purposes. Others, however, claim he is a very important hero. The following paper examines his life and his involvement, examining
whether he was a traitor or a hero. The paper focuses on the fact that he was truly an unsung hero and it was ultimately the government who wanted to
paint him as an evil villain to the nation. Louis Riel: Hero or Traitor? Hero In first looking at the man
one author notes that through the times "Louis Riel has been seen as a demagogic madman, as an innocent victim of Prime Minister John Macdonalds fanaticism, or as a martyred
national-liberation leader."1 The author then notes a very intriguing point in that while none of these descriptions are entirely correct, "each contains some measure of truth."2 This is likely the
most truthful assessment of the man as will be seen in the examination of his life and work. It is perhaps important
