may be used. Lotus notes is a client server application that "combines e-mail, calendar and scheduling capabilities with a powerful desktop platform for collaborative applications" (IBM, 2007). The application
is usually used on an IBM Domino server (IBM, 2007). There is also built in security, as it was one of the first applications to make use of public key
cryptography (IBM, 2007). Overall, this may be seen as a flexible groupware application when the way it is used is considered. Looking
at the way a company may use this application the most common usage is as an e-mail client, however, it can also be used as a message client to send
instant messages, as a browser and as a diary. The advantage is the interoperability of the applications between these different features and the way that it supports collaboration in a
number of ways. The use of Lotus notes started ion the company before it was bought out by IBM as a contact application, supporting discussions and contact management databases,
this use has been extended for use with blogs, customer relationship management (CRM) and even to aid with help desk management (IBM, 2007). The use as an e-mail client
is important to the company, where this is used on a non IBM Domino server, such as for a remote employee the application also supports POP and IMAP email. There
is also the facility for the email window to be used to undertake web browsing, for example, where a URL is given in an email. However, the usual set up
