Simpsons Works The background and works of Lorna Simpson demonstrate a postmodern sensibility and reflect the changes that have occurred in art and artistry through specific social movements in
the modern era. Initially, Simpsons early photographic work represented a kind of documentary style, the use of photography as a basis for catching moments in time and recording them
(Lorna Simpson, 2004). Like many conceptual artists, Simpsons early works reflect her own struggle with bringing together thematic construction and the medium she chose, photography. Because of the
very defined nature of photography as a tool for documenting moments in time, Simpson sought out methods for integrating themes into her photography, and this is the manner in which
she expanded her creating and intuitive processes. One of Simpsons most significant themes is the theme of the invisibility of the Black woman. Simpson created a number of
depictions of Black women that hide their face, their central visual identity. This is the basis through which Simpson creates a kind of iconographic view of the Black woman;
